This 3-Year-Old Stopped Breathing. Then A Police Officer Saved His Life

The last situation any parents wouldn’t want to be in is to find themselves calling 911 to save the life of their child who stopped breathing. Unfortunately, a Texas couple was tested by this situation when their son became unresponsive outside a KFC restaurant on October 12, 2016. However, an angel wearing a police uniform arrived and resuscitated the child after administering a CPR. This incident was captured on the police’s dashboard camera.

Granbury police officer Chase Miller was near the establishment when he heard a dispatcher call for paramedics. The toddler’s father called 911 after his son had a seizure and stopped breathing. Miller saved the life of the three-year-old, Brayden Geis, who received a CPR.

When Miller arrived at KFC, Brayden’s mother, Bethany rushed over his son who was motionless. Miller’s immediate action was to administer a CPR on the child. The boy’s parents were both terrified as their son was being revived. Brayden’s father, John, assisted with CPR while his mother was hysterical. Good heavens, the boy began to breathe after several CPRs.

According to Miller, Brayden passed out in 106-degree temperatures. His initial observations revealed that the toddler had an elevated pulse with his lips bright blue. Though the boy’s heart was beating, he was not breathing. Brayden went unconscious after he suffered a fever-induced seizure. He was rushed to the hospital where he made a full recovery.

Bethany is CPR-certified but she became hysterical after Brayden passed out. She said that she panicked when his son started having a seizure.

Miller’s heroic effort didn’t go unnoticed. He received the Life Saving Award from Granbury Mayor Nin Hulett. A city council meeting was held to bestow the award to Miller who was reunited with Brayden and his parents during the ceremony. The officer gave the boy a toy from his favorite show, Paw Patrol. Coincidentally, his favorite character is a K-9 officer also named Chase.

Fever-induced seizures affect kids three months to six years old. These convulsions can happen during a fever above 38-degree Celsius. Parents should not take chances when their child has a high fever. However, they should not panic either.

Some of the symptoms of a febrile seizure include sudden tightening of muscles on the sides of a child’s body, the child crying or moaning, and vomiting. Brayden turned blue and did not breathe, which are also symptoms of the medical condition.

If the child is less than three months old, any fever above 38-degree Celsius warrants a quick call to the doctor. For children between three months and six years old, they should be examined by a pediatrician once his fever hits 37-degrees, according to Steven Shelov, M.D., the editor-in-chief of American Academy of Pediatrics’ Caring for Your Baby and Young Child.
