Adorable Little Girl Gives Her Dinner To A Homeless Man

An eight-year-old girl from California named Ella Scott won the hearts of millions after a video of her kindness towards a homeless man went viral. The one and a half snippet was first uploaded by the girl’s father on Facebook on September 1, 2016. It quickly became viral when the social media world picked it up. Media organizations such as the “USA Today” and Britain’s “The Daily Mail” also took notice and reported on the girl’s compassion and concern for the less fortunate.

The video was taken on August 31, 2016, when Ella was having dinner with her father, Eddie, at Lallapalooza in Monterey. Ella asked her dad if she could give her untouched dinner plate to a homeless man sitting outside the restaurant. Eddie filmed Ella as she went outside the restaurant and gave her steak and potatoes to the homeless man who was later identified as David Salkowski.

When Ella came back into the restaurant, she looked extremely pleased with herself. Then, Eddie asked her what she felt after sharing her dinner with the man. She replied “I like it” while staring at the man outside.

The random act of kindness shown by Ella was praised by many people on the Facebook page of Diply. One commenter credits Ella’s parents for truly raising a wonderful human being. Another takes notice of the look of giving on Ella’s face and not expecting something in return. Another one stresses the need for parents to instill compassion in their kids.

According to the National Alliance to End Homeless, there are more than 500,000 homeless people in the U.S. as of January 2015. Of that number, 35% were people in families while more than 50% were individuals. Chronically homeless individuals account for 15% of that number.

These homeless people were either sleeping outside or part of a transitional housing program. Latest data show that decreases in overall homelessness were seen in 33 states including the District of Columbia. These declines were concentrated in the South and Midwest.

Homelessness in the U.S. is attributed to several factors including unemployment, housing cost burden, and rising cost of living standards. The U.S. economic recovery has contributed to the decline of homeless people.

The U.S. government enacted the HEARTH Act in 2009 that is aimed to provide supportive housing and rapid re-housing to address the problem of homelessness across the country. Between 2014 and 2015, more states recorded increases in rapid re-housing capacity as well as in the number of permanent supportive housing beds. There is a notable decline in utilization of transitional housing nationwide despite the increase in capacity.

Remember... back in those days, there was no electricity... no refrigerators... no law enforcement... and certainly no grocery store or supermarkets... Some of these exceptional skills are hundreds of years of old and they were learned the hard way by the early pioneers.
