A Little Understanding Can Make A Huge Impact

“Falling Letters” is an animated short film created by Swedish filmmaker Erik Roselund that depicts a day in the life of a child with attention deficit hyper disorder or ADHD. This four-minute animation highlights a young student’s struggles with daily life including social issues with his classmates, challenges in the school such reading, math, and gym, and his day-to-day skills like eating his lunch and catching the bus home.

The Swedish title of the “Falling Letters” is “Bokstavsbahn.” The animation focuses on the attention deficit of ADHD rather than the hyperactivity. What makes “Bokastavsbahn” exceptional is its exploration of the kid’s sense of isolation. Several sequences vividly tackle it including making a paper plane from his exercise sheet, modeling his food, and creating his own animation. The kid’s solitary existence is not helped by people who look on him that are either puzzled or disapproving with his actions.

You can see the boy’s frustration in gym class, his preference to play with his food in the cafeteria line, and his difficulty to pay attention to the teacher. Everything around the boy creates a distraction such as flowers growing on the side of a road. Receiving strange looks for from his fellow students is heartbreaking to see.

The sketched animated video is commendable for taking viewers into the emotional state of the child. He also gets upset when he misses the bus or gets soaked in the rain. When things go his way, they can also be isolating and frustrating.

ADHD has three primary characteristics including inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Other signs include self-focused behavior, emotional turmoil, fidgetiness, lack of focus, and difficulty with finishing tasks. Males are three times more at risk to have ADHD than females. In the U.S., more than six million children between the ages of 4-7 are diagnosed with ADHD.

The video ended on a side note with the arrival of his father to pick up him up from the bus stop. This part is really touching and illustrates ADHD people’s need for support, understanding, and compassion. This short film forces you to look at ADHD differently. Those who are afflicted with this medical condition need a very supportive family or caregiver to enhance their lives.

Erik Roselund was a former illustrator and a comics artist before delving into animation. He spent two years at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts, and Design to study the art of animation. His first film was “The Dark Side of the Morning,” an expressionistic black comedy. Erik’s sophomore effort, “Compulsion,” competed in the International Critics’ Week program of the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. His 2007 short “Looking Glass” also vied for the Palme D’Ore.

A little understanding can make a huge impact.
